Xolair has now been approved for children and adults with significant food allergy!
Xolair (Omalizumab) is a monthly biologic shot that binds to the IgE antibody that causes allergic reactions and can be used to treat multiple food allergies.
Xolair is NOT a cure for food allergies, but can significantly increase the amount of food exposure needed to cause a severe allergic reaction.
Patients must still have access to epinephrine.
Omalizumab is safe. It has been studied and used in patients with other allergic conditions since 2003.
This was just approved one week ago so we still have no idea what insurance coverage will look like.
Not every patient with food allergy will want or need this.
