Do I need a referral to see AAIR?
No. You can call and schedule without a referral or a note from your primary doctor.
How soon can I get an appointment?
New appointments are typically available in under two weeks. Call (585) 442-0150 or click the “Schedule An Appointment” tab on top of the page.
Do you see children and adults?
Yes. We treat children and adults for allergy and asthma.
Where are the offices?
Brighton/Henrietta: 3136 Winton Rd S, Suite 203, Rochester — (585) 442-0150
Perinton: 6800 Pittsford Palmyra Rd, Building 400, Suite 400, Fairport — (585) 425-1650
Canandaigua: 3170 West Street, Suite 222 — (585) 396-7280
What do you treat?
Asthma, nasal and eye allergies, sinus problems, hives, food allergy, stinging-insect allergy, drug allergy, eczema and skin allergies, and mast cell disorders (MCAS). We also offer the most extensive environmental allergy testing in Rochester, allergy shots, biologics, and an infusion center.
What is the goal of treatment?
A plan built for you, aimed at long-term control with less daily medication when that is safe.
What is allergy testing like?
Skin testing is done in the office by our experienced staff and is used for environmental, food, venom, and some drug allergies. Skin testing is the most accurate form of testing for allergic sensitivities. It is well tolerated by adults and children. Your provider decides which tests you need.
Do you offer allergy shots?
Yes. Immunotherapy (allergy shots) is used for environmental allergies, asthma, and venom allergy. Shots can be given in our offices, with flexible timing from 8:15 am to 6pm on late nights. When appropriate, we can also send vials to a primary care office, college health service, or an out-of-town clinic.
How long do allergy shots take to work?
Many patients improve over months, not days. The plan, including how long you stay on shots, is set after testing and a visit. Shots are one of the few treatments that can sometimes be stopped with benefit that continues long term after stopping.
Do drug companies influence your treatment plans?
No. Unlike other local Allergy physicians, all providers at aair do not receive any funding or payments from pharmaceutical companies. That ensures we stay unbiased and focus only on what is the optimal care for each patient without any outside influence.
Why do you talk about less daily medication?
Medications can be useful to control symptoms, but they still are chemicals with potential side effects, especially with long term use. We prefer to identify and avoid causes, implement measures to reduce exposures, and often desensitization shots to turn down your own body’s overreaction and chemical production. Doing so often significantly improves symptoms and reduces need for multiple long term medications.
Do you treat food allergies?
Yes, in children and adults. Evaluation may include history, testing, and, when needed, an oral food challenge. Treatment is individualized. Xolair is one option for some food-allergy patients when it is appropriate.
Do you treat bee and insect-sting allergy?
Yes. We evaluate sting reactions and can offer venom immunotherapy. Blood tests alone miss many reactions. Carry an epinephrine auto-injector if you have been prescribed one; shots are used to lower the risk of a worse reaction, not to replace it.
Do you treat hives and swelling?
Yes, including hives (urticaria) and angioedema. Some cases are allergic; many are not. We look for triggers and use medication or biologics, including Xolair, when those fit.
What are biologic injections?
These are targeted medicines for harder-to-control asthma and hives, such as Xolair, Nucala, Fasenra, and Tezspire. Injections are given at all three offices. Your provider decides if one is appropriate
What is the infusion center?
AAIR has an infusion suite at the Brighton/Henrietta office and gives biologic injections at all three locations. We accept orders from AAIR physicians and from all outside physicians. Cost is typically lower than a hospital infusion center, with no hospital facility fee. For referrals or questions, call (585) 672-0023.
Do you do pollen counts?
Yes. AAIR provides the ONLY local pollen counts which are used by all Rochester television stations and newspapers. Counts are a guide for the region, not a personal diagnosis. Follow us on Facebook for the most up to date counts daily.
Are you part of a hospital?
No. AAIR has been an independent allergy practice since 1985, with offices in Brighton/Henrietta, Perinton, and Canandaigua. We are affiliated with local hospitals, but independently owned and operated.
What should I bring to the first visit?
A list of medicines, including over-the-counter allergy medicines, and any prior allergy tests. Make sure to follow the list of medications to stop at least 7 days prior to testing. Stopping them too late can make skin tests less accurate.
Do you take my insurance?
We take most major insurances. Coverage depends on the plan. Call (585) 433-4351 and have the card ready so staff can check before the visit.
