Custom Immunotherapy (Allergy Shots) for Lasting Relief
Allergy shots, or immunotherapy, are a long-term treatment to naturally turn down the body’s own overresponse to allergies. Medications only temporarily cover up the effects of chemicals released in your body, and they only work if taken continuously. What controlled symptoms one year often is not enough the next, so another spray or another pill gets added. Shots are aimed at turning down the allergy itself, not at covering the symptoms.
Shots are used for asthma, environmental allergies, and venom reactions. Allergy shots often lead to a significant reduction in symptoms and in medication. They are one of the few allergy treatments that can be stopped, with benefit that continues after they are discontinued.
Your shots are custom-made for you based on the results of skin testing. The extract is mixed from those results and your history, not from a stock recipe.
You start at a low dose and slowly increase the dose at each visit. Build-up is flexible, and you can choose to come anywhere from 2 to 14 days. Each visit is a subcutaneous injection in the back of the arm. These are well tolerated, even in young children, because the injection is under the skin, not into the muscle. Our nurses specialize in giving shots. Most visits are short, with a 30-minute wait in the office after the injection.
Once the top maintenance dose is reached, shots can be spread from every 3 weeks to as long as every 6 weeks. This is maintained for 5 years, at which point many people can stop with continued long-term benefit after discontinuation.
Build-up and maintenance are given in Brighton, Perinton, and Canandaigua. After you are stable, vials can often be sent to a primary care office, a college health service, or an out-of-town clinic. Shots work well for children and adults.
No referral is needed. Call the office you want to be seen at.
