Complete In-Office Breathing & Lung Function Testing
Most allergy offices stop at spirometry, a test of how fast you can blow. That misses a lot. Our Rochester practice features a full set in our office, so you are not sent to a hospital pulmonary lab for the rest.
Spirometry measures how much air you can move and how fast. It is the basic test for obstruction, the pattern seen in asthma.
Lung volumes, including total lung capacity (TLC), measure how much air the lungs hold, not only how fast you can blow. Spirometry can look acceptable while air is trapped or the lung volume is small. TLC is what shows that.
Diffusing capacity (DLCO) measures how well oxygen crosses from the lung into the blood. Cough or shortness of breath that spirometry does not explain is why this test exists.
Exhaled nitric oxide (NIOX) measures allergic inflammation in the airway. A person can move air normally and still have inflamed airways. Spirometry does not show that. NIOX does.
Taken together, these tests separate “you cannot move air,” “you are not moving oxygen,” and “the airway is inflamed.” A single blow test cannot. Testing is matched to the visit. You will not have every test every time. Results are reviewed with you before you leave.
Many Children can do the maneuver.
